Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness
The Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness is located in southern Utah/ Northern Arizona, mostly within the Vermillion Cliffs National Monument. It is a desert area of amazing geology. Its main attractions include Buckskin Gulch, Paria Canyon, and Coyote Buttes. One may find petroglyphs and pottery shards in many areas.

North Coyote Buttes: The Wave
The main attraction here can be found in the North Coyote Buttes. It is a formation of twisted sandstone, consisting of layers of yellow, pink, and red, known as The Wave. The Wave is such a popular attraction that permits are required, and one must obtain permits well in advance online as possible. Alternatively one may try to obtain a walk-in permit the day before, although the crowds are usually large and the odds are long.

South Coyote Buttes: Paw Hole
Another option in the area is the South Coyote Buttes. Two of the more visited areas are Paw Hole and the Cottonwood Tepees. Although not as famous as The Wave, the scenery here is also very beautiful and dramatic. A permit is needed, but is not difficult to obtain. It is often possible to get a permit on the same day. The Cottonwood teepees are more distant, and fewer people go there. A vehicle with high clearance or four-wheel drive may be necessary, depending on the road conditions. Be sure you get good directions!
